When I left work at 5pm LT supercells were ongoing southwest of the Kansas City metro. They quickly went tornado warned but the SE storm motions were too fast and I was only able to get a few structure shots from a distance.

I wasn't expecting to chase today but rapidly developing thunderstorms on the south side of KC were more than I could resist.

Looking SW at the anvil of a soon to be highly tornadic supercell in SE Kansas.

Although not visible in the above image this wallcloud apparently contains the latter stages of the Blue Mound EF-4 tornado. This image was taken 2 miles north of Mound City, KS looking north. NWS Damage Tracks

This is the last shot of the wallcloud that was likely associated with the Blue Mound, KS EF-4 tornado.

One of very few cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. The lack of CG activity made it very difficult to observe the wallclouds/tornadoes with this supercell. NWS Damage Survey

I observed hail up to the size of golf balls in Harrisonville, MO as the meso from a second supercell passed just the south of me.

    02/24/07Central Kansas

A textbook cold core tornado outbreak appeared to be in order for Central Kansas as Eric Nguyen and I made our morning forecasts in Hays, KS. We targeted the area between Salina and Marion, KS at 16z. Before leaving Hays the hard drive on my laptop crashed so I really don't know where any of my images were taken. The best I can do is say somewhere between Marion and Salina, KS. Without data or even a Kansas map I decided to stay close to Eric Nguyen and Scott Blair throughout the chase.

Having chased a few cold core setups before I was prepared. LOL

The funnel in the above image lasted ~7 minutes and at one point had small needle like vortices poking out of it. I was absolutely convinced that a tornado was developing but no evidence of a ground circulation became evident. In the end this funnel was the highlight of the day. Now I am left wondering why the cold core tornado event didn't happen. This nonevent is one that I plan to study very closely for it appeared to have all the ingredients but didn't produce much.

This was a fun chase and it was great to spend some time with old friends, something that I didn't get to do much of in 2006.
